Jenraa Raiyn was born in the Kendra Valley of the Kendra province during the Occupation of Bajor and lived there until the age of 14. Her father was one of the few Xenexian’s that had left Xenex and was operating as a smuggler that provided weapons to the Bajoran resistance. Shortly after her birth her mother Jenraa Kya was selected as a comfort woman for the Cardassian overseer. The position allowed a measure of safety and security for the Jenraa’s that few other Bajoran’s had.

Still a gilded cage is still a cage and Raiyn was subjected to the constant suffering of her people. The Kendra Valley Massacre is of a special note since her mother was the consort of the Cardassian in charge of the province she was accused of being a collaborator. Attempts would be made on the Cardassian several times when either Kya or Raiyn would have to be killed to succeeded. The missions were foiled but it was only a matter of time before they succeded. Kya contacted her one time lover D’Xyn. He was understandably surprised to find out the he had a daughter but he agreed to smuggle her out of Bajor and to Federation space.

The trip from Bajor to Earth was a very tense one filled with constant awkwardness. Still D’Xyn was very honest with Raiyn. Several interesting lines that still stick with Raiyn were. “I never wanted to be a father but I am so I will do what is right to the best of my ability.” “I know what it’s like to see your world occupied and destroyed by your eyes your not a kid and you won’t be treated as one.” “The best way to fight back now is to succeed at whatever you want to do.”

Upon arrival on Earth Raiyn was taking in by the friends of a friend of a friend. Richard and Inez Resnik were both civilians that taught at Starfleet Academy as Professors of Latin and Interstellar Law. They had 1 month old twins and being politically active and up to date very sympathetic to the Bajoran cause.

Adjustment did not come without much difficulty but it did come. Raiyn was a bright girl and reasonably well educated for her condition and quickly adapted and excelled with a few basic “catch up” school courses. She excelled at any sport she was introduced to modern and old fashioned and the more physical the better.

Although later adopted by the Resnik’s the Asst. Commandant of Starfleet Academy would be the command level officer to write the letter of recommendation for Raiyn as she was not a Federation citizen. She managed to pass the knowledge and theory tests well enough but completely aced the psych test, despite the use of holographic Cardassians in it.

The Academy was certainly an adventure for Raiyn. Science and engineering courses being a rough spot and excelling in the security and tactical courses. The mandatory classes in command basics went surprisingly well and Raiyn switched her minor from Flight Conn to Command.

During the years at the Academy Raiyn became quite well known on campus. She was fairly popular and as a member of the Academy’s boxing team brought glory as she won every major tournament she participated in. The one tie she suffered was to K’Tra of the Klingon War Academy in an exhibition match near the end of her first year. Raiyn and her friends pulled several well known pranks and got in trouble in other ways. The walked the line of propriety, peered over it, maybe snuck just past it once or twice when no one was looking but never totally breached it.

Upon graduation in the upper third of her class Raiyn was posted to the U.S.S. Rebel Yell as a security officer. She was an instrumental member of several away teams and during border patrol played a very important role in bringing down an Orion slave smuggling operations. Her Department head and commanding officer both recommended her for Advanced Tactical Training were she not only did not wash out as half the class does every year but graduated third in the entire class. She returned to duty on the Rebel Yell for a year before being reassigned to the Archimedes.
